St. Mary's Girls High School traces its origins to 1864, when 'Thirukudumba Vilasam', a humble Lower Primary school, was established in Cherthala to serve the local community. The institution functioned as a co-educational space until 1921, when it was reorganised exclusively for girls. On 22 May 1933, through the pivotal efforts of Adv. Joseph Panjikkaran of the Praja Council, the school was formally upgraded to 'St. Mary's English Middle School' — the milestone from which the institution takes its founding year of 1933.
The school attained full High School status on 1 June 1949, under Headmistress Sister Mary Visitation. The years that followed were marked by growth in character and community: the Girl Guides unit was launched in 1955 and produced students who received the President's Guide Certificate directly from the President of India; the Parent-Teacher Association was constituted in 1966–67; and the school independently ran a student midday meal programme from 1983 until the state government's scheme took over.
Today, St. Mary's GHS operates as a fully recognised, government-aided secondary institution under the General Education Department of Kerala, guided by the motto 'Excellent Student, Excellent Society'. The school serves students across the Upper Primary (Classes 5–7) and High School (Classes 8–10) sections. It is celebrated for consistently outstanding SSLC results — 35 students secured full A+ from 249 who appeared in 2025–26 alone — for a thriving Girl Guides programme whose students regularly receive the prestigious Rajya Puraskar (Governor's Award), and for award-winning performances at the State Kalolsavam, Sasthramela science fest and state work experience fairs.
